Edward Barry (1759–1822) was an English writer. He mostly wrote about religious and medical topics. During his life, he was known as one of London's most popular preachers. He published many papers and books. His most famous work was Friendly Call to a New Species of Dissenters, which was printed many times.

Edward Barry's Life and Work

Edward Barry was born in Bristol. His father was a doctor. Edward went to Bristol Grammar School. He later studied medicine at St Andrews University and earned a medical degree.

However, he liked studying religion more than medicine. So, he became a priest in the Church of England. For several years, he worked at St Marylebone Parish Church in London. He became one of the most popular preachers there. He was known for helping people understand their faith better.

After living in London for most of his adult life, he moved to Reading. There, he worked on getting some of his books ready for printing. His most well-known book, Friendly Call to a New Species of Dissenters, was published many times.

He dedicated this book to Sir William Scott. Sir William Scott helped Edward Barry get two important church jobs. These jobs were at St Mary and St Leonard churches in Wallingford, Oxfordshire.

About Edward Barry

Edward Barry was also a special chaplain for the Freemasons. Once, he gave a sermon to them and received a gold medal. They even asked to publish his sermon because it was so good.

When he passed away, many people attended his funeral in Wallingford. This showed how much he was respected there. Edward Barry was married twice. He followed the traditional beliefs of the Church of England.
