Early Life and Education

Edward Bayntun went to St John's College, Oxford when he was 17 years old in 1636. This is a famous university in England. Later, in 1638, he studied law at Lincoln's Inn, which is a place where future lawyers learn.

His Time in Parliament

Sir Edward Bayntun was a member of parliament, which means he was chosen by people to represent them in the government.

  • In April 1640, he was first elected as an MP for a town called Devizes. This was for a short meeting of Parliament known as the Short Parliament.
  • Later that year, in November 1640, he was re-elected for Devizes to serve in the Long Parliament. This Parliament lasted for many years.
  • However, in 1648, he was removed from Parliament during an event called Pride's Purge. This was a time when some members were forced out.
  • He returned to Parliament in 1654, again representing Devizes, during the First Protectorate Parliament.
  • In 1659, he became an MP for Calne in the Third Protectorate Parliament.
  • He also served in the Convention Parliament in 1660.

Life After the Restoration

After a period of big changes in England, when the monarchy was brought back (this was called the Restoration), Sir Edward Bayntun received special honors.

  • In 1661, he was made a Knight of the Order of the Bath. This is a special award given by the King or Queen.
  • He also had a role in the Scottish army.
  • In 1664, he became the High Sheriff of Wiltshire. This was an important local government job.
  • In 1675, he was elected MP for Devizes again. He continued to serve in Parliament until he passed away in 1679.
