Edward A. Boyse (August 11, 1923 – July 14, 2007) was an important British-American scientist. He was a physician (doctor) and a biologist (someone who studies living things). Dr. Boyse is famous for his work on the immune system, which protects our bodies from sickness. He also studied pheromones, which are special smells animals use to communicate.

Edward Boyse's Life and Work

Edward Boyse was born in Worthing, England. He studied medicine at the University of London. He became a doctor in 1952 and earned a higher medical degree in 1957.

Early Career in New York

In 1962, Dr. Boyse joined the staff at Sloan-Kettering in New York City. Before that, he worked at New York University. He became a professor of biology at Cornell University Medical College. He taught there from 1969 to 1989.

Discoveries About the Immune System

Dr. Boyse and his team were among the first to study how the immune system fights off sickness. They used mice to understand how the body reacts to antigens. Antigens are substances that can trigger an immune response. They focused on the important role of white blood cells in this process.

For his great work, he received several awards. In 1975, he won the Cancer Research Institute William B. Coley Award. This award is for excellent research in immunology, the study of the immune system. In 1976, he also won the Isaac Adler Prize.

Research on Animal Communication

Later in his career, Dr. Boyse became interested in how animals communicate. He studied how animals use special odors, called pheromones, to send messages to each other.

He also made an important suggestion about medicine. Dr. Boyse was the first to propose using blood from the umbilical cord. This cord blood could be used instead of bone marrow for certain medical treatments.

Awards and Retirement

Dr. Boyse was a highly respected scientist. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society in the UK. These are very high honors for scientists.

Edward Boyse retired in Tucson, Arizona. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 83.
