Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Edward Evans (born 1716 – died 21 June 1798) was a Welsh poet. He was known for his strong connection to ancient Welsh traditions and his work as a religious leader.

Who Was Edward Evans?

Edward Evans was born in Wales in 1716. He lived during the 1700s, a time when many people were deeply connected to their local communities and traditions. Evans became well-known as a poet and a pastor, serving his community for many years.

A Poet and Pastor

Edward Evans was considered a "bard," which is a special kind of poet in Welsh culture. Bards were not just writers; they were also storytellers and keepers of history, often following old traditions. It was even said that Evans's family line could be traced back to the ancient Druids, who were important religious and cultural leaders in ancient Celtic societies. This shows how deeply connected he was to the history and traditions of Wales.

From 1772 until his death in 1798, Edward Evans served as a pastor at the Old Meeting House in Aberdare. A pastor is a religious leader who guides a church or congregation. People said that he was very dedicated to his religious duties. Many people traveled from far away to attend his services, showing how respected and popular he was in his community.

His Writings and Legacy

Edward Evans was a busy writer and translator. He helped make important religious texts available in Welsh. For example, he translated a book called S. Bourne's Catechism in 1757. He also worked on a version of the Book of Ecclesiastes (a book from the Bible) put into verse, which he published with Lewis Hopkin in 1767.

He also wrote an address for a meeting of ministers in 1775, which included two hymns. After his death, his son, Rees Evans (who lived from 1778 to 1869), collected and published his father's poems in 1804. This helped make sure Edward Evans's poetry would be remembered.

Edward Evans passed away on 21 June 1798. It's interesting to note that he died on the very day he was supposed to meet with other bards from the "Chair of Glamorgan," a group of important Welsh poets. His life showed a strong dedication to both his faith and the rich poetic traditions of Wales.
