Edward H. Morris: A Life of Service
Edward H. Morris was born in Flemingsburg, Kentucky on May 30, 1858. He moved to Chicago and attended St. Patrick's High School. After finishing school, he studied law.
Becoming a Lawyer
In 1879, Edward Morris passed his exams and became a lawyer in Chicago. He was the fifth African American lawyer to be allowed to practice law in Illinois. This was a very important achievement at that time.
Serving in Government
Mr. Morris became a politician. He represented Cook County in the Illinois House of Representatives. This is a group of elected officials who make laws for the state of Illinois. He served two terms there. His first term was from 1890 to 1892. His second term was from 1902 to 1904.
Working for Race Relations
In 1919, Edward H. Morris was chosen to join the Chicago Commission on Race Relations. This group was formed to study and help improve relationships between different racial groups in Chicago. It was an important step towards fairness and understanding.
