Edward Leeson's Life and Public Service
Edward Leeson studied at Trinity College, Dublin. This is a famous university in Ireland. In 1862, he became a lawyer. This means he was "called to the Bar" at the Inner Temple in London.
His older brother, Joseph Leeson, 5th Earl of Milltown, passed away in 1871. After this, Edward became the 6th Earl of Milltown. On August 23, 1881, he was chosen as an Irish representative peer. This important role allowed him to be a member of the House of Lords in the British Parliament.
In 1887, Lord Milltown became the Lord Lieutenant of Wicklow. This was a high-ranking government position in County Wicklow, Ireland. He was like the Queen's representative there. In 1889, he took on more public duties. He became an Honorary Commissioner. On February 7, 1890, he received a very special honor. He was made a Knight of St. Patrick. This happened shortly before he passed away.
In 1871, he married Lady Geraldine Stanhope. She was the daughter of the Leicester Stanhope, 5th Earl of Harrington. Edward and Lady Geraldine did not have any children.
After Edward's death, his title went to his brother, Henry Leeson. Henry passed away just one year later. Because there were no direct heirs, the title of Earl of Milltown became "dormant." This means it was no longer actively used.
