Edward Montagu (1692–1776) was a rich landowner in England. He owned many coal mines and properties in Northumberland. He was the son of Charles Montagu, an important Member of Parliament (MP), and the grandson of Edward Montagu, the first Earl of Sandwich. Edward went to famous schools like Eton College and Clare College, Cambridge. He also studied law at Lincoln's Inn.

In 1730, Edward started renting a country house called Sandleford near Newbury. In 1742, he married Elizabeth Robinson. She was 22, and he was 50. Even though she saw marriage as more of a practical agreement than something based on love, they got married. Their marriage was good for their social standing, but it wasn't very romantic.

The next year, Elizabeth gave birth to their son, John. She loved her child very much. Sadly, John died unexpectedly in 1744. Elizabeth was heartbroken. After this, they did not have any more children. However, Edward and Elizabeth remained good friends for the rest of their lives together.

In December 1745, Edward was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a group for important scientists and thinkers. He was chosen because he was seen as a "gentleman of great merit" who knew a lot about math and science. Many important people, including his cousin and brother-in-law, suggested him for this honor.

Starting in 1750, Edward and Elizabeth had a regular routine. They would spend their winters in London, in an area called Mayfair. In the spring, they would move to their country house, Sandleford Priory. Edward would then travel to Northumberland and Yorkshire to manage his properties. Sometimes, Elizabeth would go with him. In the late 1760s, Edward became ill. Elizabeth took care of him, even though she missed her freedom. He passed away on May 20, 1776, when he was 83 years old. He left all his money and property to Elizabeth.

Member of Parliament for Huntingdon

For more than 30 years, from 1734 to 1768, Edward Montagu was a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Huntingdon. An MP is a person elected to represent their area in the country's government. This seat in Parliament was controlled by his cousin, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich.
