Edward Mulhare (born April 8, 1923 – died May 24, 1997) was a famous actor from Ireland. He acted for over 50 years! He is most remembered for playing important characters in two popular TV shows: The Ghost & Mrs. Muir and Knight Rider.

Edward Mulhare's Early Life and Acting Start
Edward Mulhare was born in Cork City, Ireland. He was one of three brothers. As a child, he went to St. Nessan's Christian Brothers School. Later, he attended North Monastery.
When he was older, Edward started studying medicine at the National University of Ireland. But he soon decided that acting was his true passion. He began his acting career in different theaters in Ireland. This included the famous Gate Theatre in Dublin.
After gaining experience in Ireland, he moved to London. There, he worked with very famous actors. These included Orson Welles and John Gielgud. He even acted with Orson Welles in a play called Othello in 1951. Before moving to America, he also performed in the play Pygmalion.
In 1955, Edward Mulhare starred in the first movie ever made in Israel. This film was called Hill 24 Doesn't Answer.
Becoming Professor Higgins on Broadway
One of Edward Mulhare's most famous roles was on stage. He played Professor Higgins in the original Broadway show My Fair Lady. He took over the role from Rex Harrison in 1957. Mulhare had been Harrison's understudy before this.
He played Professor Higgins for three years in New York. That was over 1,000 performances! He then took the show on a tour around the world. This tour even included many performances in Russia. He continued to play this role in different theaters into the 1970s.
Edward Mulhare and actress Anne Rogers also acted together in another musical. They played King Arthur and Guenevere in the show Camelot.
Edward Mulhare on Television
Edward Mulhare first appeared on television in 1956. It was in an episode of The Adventures of Robin Hood. He also appeared on the game show What's My Line? in 1958 and 1963.
By 1965, he was working in Hollywood. He appeared in movies like Von Ryan's Express (1965). He was also in Our Man Flint (1966) and Caprice (1967). He also guest-starred in many TV shows.
Starring in The Ghost & Mrs. Muir
From 1968 to 1970, Edward Mulhare starred in The Ghost & Mrs. Muir. This was a popular TV show about a ghost. He played Captain Daniel Gregg. Interestingly, Rex Harrison had played Captain Gregg in the original 1947 movie. So, Mulhare took over another role from Harrison!
In 1969, Mulhare also starred in a TV movie called Gidget Grows Up. He played Alex MacLaughlin, a love interest for the main character, Gidget.
Devon Miles in Knight Rider
One of Edward Mulhare's most famous roles was in the TV series Knight Rider. This show ran from 1982 to 1986. He played Devon Miles. Devon was the director of the Foundation for Law and Government. He worked alongside David Hasselhoff, who played Michael Knight.
Mulhare also appeared in an episode of the original Battlestar Galactica. In the mid-1980s, he hosted a TV show called Secrets & Mysteries. This show explored historical puzzles and strange events.
Later Acting Roles and Final Years
Edward Mulhare continued to act in films. These included Megaforce and Out to Sea. His very last acting role was on the TV show Baywatch Nights. He appeared with his former Knight Rider co-star, David Hasselhoff, in December 1996.
Edward Mulhare passed away on May 24, 1997, at the age of 74. He died at his home in Van Nuys, California, due to a serious illness. The TV show Team Knight Rider dedicated an episode to his memory. Edward Mulhare is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Cork City, Ireland.
