Honoring Edward Payson Roe

Edward Payson Roe was a famous American writer. He spent his last years at his home, called Roelands. This home was near Storm King Mountain. His property was on a hill. From there, he could see the beautiful Hudson Highlands. He often wrote about this area in his books.

Roe's home had lovely gardens that he cared for. It was also surrounded by large woods. He was very popular, especially among middle-class Americans. When he passed away in 1888, he was only 50 years old. His death was a big shock to his family and many fans. At that time, his publishers believed over 1.4 million copies of his novels had been sold. This shows how much people enjoyed his stories.

A Special Memorial Ceremony

On Memorial Day in 1894, a special gathering took place. Edward's family, friends, and fans came together. They met in the woods behind his old home. They gathered near a large rock. Edward Roe was known to rest at this very rock after long hikes with his friends.

A bronze memorial tablet was placed on the side of this boulder. It was set so everyone could see it from below. Many important people attended the ceremony. These included Rev. Dr. Teal, a good friend of Roe's. William Hamilton Gibson, an artist and nature expert, was also there. Dr. Lyman Abbott gave a speech. He had helped Roe with his famous book, Barriers Burned Away, back in 1872. Abbott spoke about Roe's amazing writing skills. He explained how Roe's stories helped people understand different lives. His books also inspired readers to have noble goals and hopes.

About the Park

The land where Roe's home, Roelands, once stood has been divided. Now, it is a neighborhood. One street leading to the park is called Payson Road. This name honors Edward Payson Roe. The park itself is located on Boulevard. This road's name is a reminder of the original path that ran along Roe's property.

A sign helps visitors find the path to the special boulder. The park is about two acres in size. It offers a quiet place to remember a talented writer.
