Early Military Career

Tyng was a commander at several forts. These forts were like strong castles. They helped protect people from attacks. He was in charge of Fort Loyal for two periods, from 1681 to 1682 and again from 1686 to 1687.

Protecting Fort Loyal

As commander, Tyng made sure Fort Loyal was safe. He led the soldiers there. Their mission was to keep the area secure. Forts like this were very important for safety during those times.

A Target for Attackers

During the Raid on Salmon Falls, attackers originally planned to target Edward Tyng's father's home. This home was near Fort Loyal. However, they changed their minds. Instead, they attacked a different place called Salmon Falls.

Becoming Governor of Acadia

Edward Tyng also commanded Fort William Henry. Later, in 1690, he was given a very important job. He became the Governor of Acadia. A governor is like a leader of a region. They help manage the area and its people.

Captured in Battle

Sadly, Tyng's time as governor was short. In 1691, he was captured. This happened during a sea battle called the Naval battle off St. John (1691). He was taken prisoner by a French commander named Simon-Pierre Denys de Bonaventure. Another person captured with him was John Alden III.

Life as a Prisoner

After his capture, Tyng was sent to Quebec. There, he briefly met another prisoner named Hannah Swarton. Later, he was moved to France. He was held in a prison in a city called La Rochelle. Edward Tyng died in prison sometime after 1691.
