A Leader in New France

Early Military Actions

  • In 1690, Bonaventure joined forces with another famous explorer, Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville. Together, they attacked a place called York Fort in Hudson Bay. This was a big deal because Hudson Bay was important for fur trading.

  • In 1696, Bonaventure worked with Jean-Vincent d’Abbadie and Iberville again. They led a siege against a fort called Pemaquid. A siege is when an army surrounds a place to try and capture it.

Becoming Governor of Acadia

After the governor of Acadia, Jacques-François de Monbeton de Brouillan, died in 1705, Bonaventure stepped up. He became the temporary governor of Acadia. He held this important job from September 1705 until a new governor, Daniel d'Auger de Subercase, was officially appointed in May 1706. Being a governor meant he was in charge of the whole region and its people.
