Discover the Edward Yeomans House

The Edward Yeomans House sits on a large piece of land, over 5 acres, overlooking a beautiful area called Palmer Cove. It's a quiet, peaceful spot.

What Does the House Look Like?

This house is a 1-1/2 story building made of wood. It has a special roof called a gambrel roof, which has two different slopes on each side. In the middle of the house, there's a large chimney. The outside walls are covered with a mix of wooden clapboards and shingles. This shows how the house has changed and grown over many years.

Inside, the house has a classic layout for homes of its time. There are rooms on either side of the big central chimney, and the kitchen is located at the back. There are also smaller rooms in the back corners.

A Peek into the House's History

The area where Noank is today was first planned out in 1712 by officials from Groton. This was done to help the town grow. The very next year, in 1713, Edward Yeomans built this house. It was originally a five-bay house with a regular gable roof.

Edward Yeomans lived there for a few years. He later decided to leave the land because of disagreements about who owned it. Before 1760, the house was made bigger with an extra section, and its original roof was replaced with the unique gambrel roof you see today.

Later, in the early 1800s, a new kitchen was added to the back of the house. Also, the main front door was moved from the south side to the north side. Because of its age and history, the Edward Yeomans House is believed to be the oldest house in Noank.
