Ed Bideau III: A Kansas Leader
Ed Bideau III was a fifth-generation Kansan. This means his family had lived in Kansas for a very long time. He grew up and went to Chanute High School. After high school, he continued his education.
Growing Up and Learning
Ed Bideau III first attended Neosho County Community College. Later, he went to Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. There, he earned two degrees: one in business and one in law. While at Washburn, he met Margaret, who would become his wife.
Starting a Career in Law
Right after Ed passed his bar exam, he and Margaret moved back to Chanute. He began working as an Assistant County Attorney for Neosho County. This job involves helping the county with legal matters. In 1976, he was elected to be the County Attorney. This meant he was the chief lawyer for the county.
Serving in the Kansas State House
In 1984, Ed Bideau III was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives. He represented the 5th district, which included Neosho County, Kansas. This was his first time serving in the state legislature.
Important Work for Kansas Families
During his time in the House, Ed Bideau III led important committees. He chaired the House Reapportionment Committee. This committee helps decide how voting districts are drawn. He also led a special group that created the first "Division of Assets" bill. This bill was very important. It helped protect older couples financially when one person needed nursing home care.
His hard work was noticed. In his first year, Kansas Magazine named him one of the top ten new lawmakers.
Returning to Public Service
After two successful terms, Ed left the legislature. He wanted to spend more time raising his children. However, he returned to the Kansas House of Representatives in 2012. This time, he represented the 9th district. This district covered Neosho County, Kansas and Allen County, Kansas. He won the primary election by a lot of votes. Then, he ran unopposed in the general election. This means no one ran against him. He continued to serve in this role until his death in September 2013.
