Eel River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Eel River is an important river in northern California, a state in the United States. It flows north for about 200 miles (322 kilometers) before reaching the Pacific Ocean. The river drains a large area of land, covering about 3,684 square miles (9,542 square kilometers).

The Eel River is mostly found in California's humid Coast Ranges. Much of the area around the river is wild and isolated, with steep hills and rugged land.

River Branches and Flow

The Eel River has several smaller rivers and streams that flow into it. These are called tributaries. The biggest tributary is the Middle Fork Eel River. Other important branches include the South Fork, the Van Duzen River, and the North Fork.

The South Fork is the longest of these tributaries. The Middle Fork, however, collects water from the largest area of land.

Dams and Water Use

Near where the Eel River begins, there are two dams. These dams help to hold back water and create reservoirs. A reservoir is like a large, artificial lake.

The dams are named Van Arsdale Reservoir and the larger Lake Pillsbury. Water from these reservoirs is sent into the Russian River valley. This helps to provide water for other areas.

Towns and Transportation

Several towns are located along the Eel River. These include Ferndale, Rio Dell, and Dos Rios. The town of Dos Rios is found where the Middle Fork joins the main Eel River. Weott is another town, located near where the South Fork meets the river.

A major road, U.S. Route 101, follows the Eel River for some distance. It continues along the river until it reaches the South Fork. A railway, the Great Northern Railway, also runs alongside part of the river. Many bridges cross the Eel River and its South Fork, helping people and vehicles get around.
