Efrem Zimbalist Winters (born December 19, 1963 – died January 27, 2025) was an American college basketball player. He was well-known for playing as a power forward for the Illinois Fighting Illini team. He stood tall at 6 feet 9 inches.

High School Basketball Star
Efrem Winters grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He went to King High School from 1978 to 1982. During his time there, he became a top basketball player.
National Recognition
After high school, Efrem was named a Parade Magazine All-American. This meant he was one of the best high school players in the country. He also joined the West team for the 1982 McDonald's All-American Team. In that game, he scored 19 points and was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP).
College Basketball Career
After his amazing high school career, Winters decided to play college basketball at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. He was a key player for the Illinois Fighting Illini from 1982 to 1986.
Freshman Year Success (1982–83)
As a freshman, Winters played in almost every game, missing only one. He was the starting power forward for the team. He played alongside future NBA star Derek Harper and other talented players like Bruce Douglas. Efrem made an immediate impact, setting new freshman records for scoring, rebounding, and games started. He led the team in rebounds and blocked shots. The Illini finished the season with a strong record of 21 wins and 11 losses. They also made it to the 1983 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament.
Sophomore Season Highlights (1983–84)
Efrem Winters had his most successful college season as a sophomore. He led the team in scoring and was second in blocked shots and rebounds. The team had an excellent year, finishing ranked #6 nationally with 26 wins and 5 losses. They even tied for the Big Ten Conference championship.
The Illini advanced to the NCAA tournament. They won against tough teams like Villanova and Maryland. However, they were eliminated by Kentucky in a close game. After this season, Winters was recognized for his great play and was named to the Big Ten's first team.
Junior and Senior Seasons (1984–86)
In his junior year (1984–85), the Illini started strong, reaching a national ranking of #4. Winters continued to be a top player, leading the team in blocked shots and rebounding. The team finished second in the Big Ten and again earned a spot in the NCAA tournament. They won two games before being eliminated in the regional semi-finals. Winters was named third-team All-Big Ten and became a team captain for his senior year.
During his senior season (1985–86), the Illini continued their winning streak. They won 10 of their first 12 games and finished with a 22-10 record. For the fourth year in a row, Winters and the Illini made it to the NCAA tournament. They won their first game but lost in the second round. Winters was recognized as honorable mention All-Big Ten.
College Career Achievements
Efrem Winters had an outstanding college career. He finished as the school's third all-time leading scorer. He also held the school record for most games started (120) until 2002. His teams won 95 out of 130 games, making it to the NCAA tournament every single year he played. A famous play for the Illini was the "Douglas-to-Winters alley-oop."
Life After College Basketball
After college, Winters was invited to try out for the U.S. men's basketball team for the 1984 Summer Olympics. He was also drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1986 NBA Draft. However, he did not play in the NBA. He later tried to play professional basketball in France but returned to Chicago.

Efrem Winters was named after the actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr. He worked for a construction company after his basketball career. He passed away on January 27, 2025, at the age of 61, after an illness. He had been retired and living in Aurora, Illinois.
