Early Life and Training

Egberto Gismonti was born in Carmo, a small city in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His mother was from Sicily, and his father was from Beirut, Lebanon. He grew up in a musical family.

When he was just six years old, Egberto started learning to play the piano. He studied at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music. For 15 years, he focused on classical music.

After his studies in Brazil, he traveled to Paris, France. There, he wanted to learn more about modern music. He studied with Nadia Boulanger, a famous teacher. She encouraged Gismonti to put the spirit of Brazil into his music.

Musical Innovations

Even though he studied piano formally, Gismonti taught himself how to play the guitar. He became very skilled at it. He even helped design guitars with more than six strings. This allowed him to play more notes and sounds at once.

Gismonti plays the guitar almost like a piano keyboard. This makes it sound like more than one person is playing. His unique style expanded what was possible with the guitar.

Exploring Brazilian Culture

Gismonti spent time in the Xingu region of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. This experience deeply influenced his music. He wrote songs like "Yualapeti" and "Sapain" inspired by his time there.

His albums Dança das Cabeças (which means "Dance of the Heads") from 1977 and Sol do Meio-Dia ("Noon Sun") from 1978 were also inspired by the Xingu. He dedicated Sol do Meio-Dia to the people and nature of the Xingu. Another album, Duas Vozes ("Two Voices") from 1984, also shows this influence.

Important Collaborations

Egberto Gismonti's music career has lasted for over five decades. He has worked with many different musicians and groups. One important group was his Brazilian band, Academia de Danças. This group included Mauro Senise on saxophone and flutes, Zeca Assumpção on bass, and Nenê on drums and percussion.

He also formed a duo with Naná Vasconcelos, who played percussion. Another famous group was a trio with Charlie Haden on bass and Jan Garbarek on saxophone.

His first album with ECM Records, Dança das Cabeças, was a big success. It was named "Album of the Year" by Stereo Review magazine. It also won the 1977 Großer Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, a German music award.

In 1978, Gismonti started his own music label called Carmo. This label has worked with ECM Records on several projects.
