About Egberto Gismonti
Egberto Gismonti grew up in a small city called Carmo in Brazil. His family loved music! His mom was from Italy, and his dad was from Lebanon.
When he was just six years old, Egberto started learning piano at a special music school in Brazil. He studied classical music for 15 years. After that, he traveled to Paris, France, to learn about modern music. There, he studied with a famous teacher named Nadia Boulanger. She told him to put the spirit and experiences of Brazil into his music.
Egberto also taught himself how to play the guitar. He even designed his own guitars with more than six strings! This allowed him to play even more complex and interesting sounds, making it sound like more than one guitar was playing at once.
A big adventure for Egberto was visiting the Xingu area in the Amazon rainforest. This trip really inspired him and changed his music. You can hear this influence in songs like "Yualapeti" and "Sapain." He also dedicated albums like Dança das Cabeças (which means "Dance of the Heads") and Sol do Meio-Dia ("Noon Sun") to the Xingu people.
Egberto Gismonti has been making music for over 50 years! He has worked with many talented musicians. Some of his important groups include his Brazilian band Academia de Danças, and duos with percussionist Naná Vasconcelos and saxophonist Jan Garbarek. His first album with ECM, Dança das Cabeças, was even named "Album of the Year" by a magazine called Stereo Review.
In 1978, he started his own music company called Carmo.
