Egeon Acton Askew (born in 1576) was an English church leader and preacher. He was known for his strong beliefs and his writings about faith and learning.

Who Was Egeon Acton Askew?

Egeon Acton Askew was born in 1576. He came from Lancashire, a county in England. His family was originally from Carlisle, in a place called Mulcaster Crescent. Later, they moved to Kirkby Ireleth in North Lancashire.

When he was seventeen years old, Egeon Askew began studying at the University of Oxford. He earned his first degree (B.A.) in April 1597. In 1598, he became a chaplain at Queen's College, which is part of Oxford University. He then earned his master's degree (M.A.) in June 1600.

What Did Egeon Acton Askew Do?

Around the time King James I came to power, Egeon Askew was a well-known preacher. He served as a minister in Greenwich, Kent.

He wrote only one book, which was officially recorded on March 27, 1605. This book was made up of sermons he had given while at college. For a long time, there wasn't even a copy of his book in the famous Bodleian Library at Oxford.

What Was His Book About?

Egeon Acton Askew's book was titled Brotherly Reconcilement. The full title was: "Brotherly Reconcilement: Preached in Oxford for the union of some, and now published with larger meditations for the unity of all in this church and common-wealth. With an apology of the use of the Fathers and secular learning in sermons."

He dedicated his book to King James I. The dedication was dated April 27, 1605, from Greenwich. The book shows that Askew had read many different texts. Its pages are filled with references to old writings and thinkers. Because of this, one historian described him as someone who knew a lot about ancient writers, religious thinkers, and scholars.

A big part of his book discusses whether it's okay to use knowledge from outside the Bible, like history or philosophy, in sermons. Some people at the time believed that only words from the Bible should be used. Askew explored this idea in his book.

We don't know exactly when or where Egeon Acton Askew died.
