Egg is a market town located in the beautiful Bregenz Forest region of western Austria. It is part of the Vorarlberg state and the Bregenz District. Egg is known for being the most populated community in the entire Bregenzerwald.

A special local business, the Brauerei Egg, was started here in 1894. It is the only brewery still operating in the Bregenz Forest today.

Where is Egg Located?

Egg covers an area of about 65.37 square kilometers (about 25 square miles). This makes it a fairly large town in terms of land area.

The town is shaped by its rivers. The Bregenzerach river and the Schmittenbach stream both flow through the village. Just north of Egg, the Subersach stream also flows, eventually joining the Bregenzer Ach river.

Egg has a rich history and culture, with several interesting places to visit and learn about.

Old Churches in Egg

Egg is home to some very old churches:

  • The Parish Church Hl. Nikolaus was first mentioned in records way back in 1275. This makes it one of the oldest church buildings in the entire Bregenz Forest.
  • The Parish Church Hl. Josef (located in Egg-Großdorf) was designed by an architect named Kaspar Waldner. It was built between 1760 and 1762 and officially opened in 1770.

Egg Museum

The Egg Museum is a great place to learn about the local area. It was founded in 1904 and focuses on the culture and history of the Bregenz Forest region. You can see many interesting items that show how people lived in the past.

Amazing Bridges in Egg

Egg is also known for its impressive bridges:

  • The Gschwendtobel Bridge is a wooden bridge that connects Lingenau and Egg, crossing over the Subersach river. It was built in 1834 by Alois Negrelli. He was also involved in planning the famous Suez Canal! This old wooden bridge is considered a masterpiece of engineering and carpentry because of how well it was built for its time.
  • The suspension bridge between Lingenau and Egg is a wire footbridge. It's 57 meters (about 187 feet) long and was built in 1901. It's a fun way to cross the Subersach river on foot.

Bregenzerwald Walking Tour

The Bregenzerwald Umgang is a special walking tour that helps you discover the unique architecture and community planning of 12 traditional villages in the Bregenz Forest, including Egg. As you walk through different landscapes and visit public buildings, homes, and everyday objects, you get a great idea of the typical building styles that have developed in the Bregenzerwald over many years.
