Falklands War and Egg Harbour
During the Falklands War in 1982, Egg Harbour was thought of as a possible spot for British forces to land. This war was a conflict between the United Kingdom and Argentina over the Falkland Islands.
Why Egg Harbour Was Considered
The British military needed a place to bring their soldiers and equipment from ships onto the land. This is called an amphibious landing. Egg Harbour was one of the places they looked at for this important step.
Why It Wasn't Chosen
However, Egg Harbour was not chosen for the main landing. There were a few reasons for this:
- There was a narrow strip of land near Darwin and Goose Green. This narrow area is called an isthmus.
- This isthmus was strongly guarded by Argentine soldiers.
- Landing at Egg Harbour would have created a "bottleneck." This means it would have been very hard for the British troops to move easily from the landing spot towards Stanley, which is the capital of the Falkland Islands.
Instead, the British landings happened at San Carlos Water. This area is located on the western side of East Falkland, also on Falkland Sound.
