Location in Alaska

Egg Island is a small, quiet island located in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is part of the Fox Islands, which are a subgroup of the larger Aleutian Islands. This island is special because it marks the easternmost point of the Aleutians West Census Area in Alaska.

Egg Island sits just off the eastern end of Unalaska Island. It is also very close to the northeastern tip of Sedanka Island. The island covers an area of about 311 acres (which is about 1.26 square kilometers). No people live on Egg Island; it is completely uninhabited.

What's in a Name?

Egg Island got its name from Russian explorers. The name "Egg Island" is a direct translation of its old Russian name.

How the Name Came About

A Russian naval officer named Lieutenant Sarichev gave the island its current name. In 1792, he called it "Ostrov Yaichnoy," which means "Island of Egg" in Russian. This name likely came from the many bird eggs found there.

Other Names for the Island

Lieutenant Sarichev also knew the island by another name: "Ostrov Ugalgan," or "Ugalgan Island." This name probably came from Captain Lieutenant Krenitzin, another Russian explorer who visited the area in 1768.
