History of Eichstätt
Eichstätt has a long and interesting history.
Early Beginnings
In the year 741, a person named St. Willibald started a special church area called the Bishopric of Eichstätt. This was built where an old Roman station used to be. The city officially became a town in 908, which means it got special rights.
Rule by Prince-Bishops
For many years, until 1802, Eichstätt was ruled by a prince-bishop. This was a leader who was both a religious bishop and a political ruler, like a prince. In 1806, Eichstätt became part of the state of Bavaria.
Modern Eichstätt
Today, Eichstätt is home to the Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. This is the only Catholic university in Germany.
The city is also well-known for its quarries. These are places where special rocks like Solnhofen Stone and Jurassic limestone are dug up. A very famous fossil, the Berlin specimen of Archaeopteryx, was found in a quarry on the Blumenberg hill near Eichstätt.
