Eighteenth Council of Toledo facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Eighteenth Council of Toledo was an important meeting held a long, long time ago in Visigothic Spain. It was the very last of these special meetings, called councils of Toledo, before a big change happened in Spain in 711 when the Moorish people arrived. This council probably took place in the year 703.

It happened when Wittiza was king, either ruling by himself or sharing the throne with his father, Ergica. A powerful church leader named Gunderic, Archbishop of Toledo was in charge of the meeting.

What Was the Council About?

The records of what exactly happened at this council have been lost over time. This might be because some of the decisions made were very controversial, meaning people strongly disagreed with them.

King Wittiza's Reforms

We know from an old book called the Chronicle of 754 that King Wittiza wanted to make some changes to the church. He asked a church leader named Sindered to help him. It's not totally clear what these changes were.

Some historians think King Wittiza wanted the council to agree to new rules about how church leaders lived. Another old book, the Chronicle of Alfonso III, says that later on, King Fruela I of Asturias changed these rules back. Overall, it seems King Wittiza was trying to fix things he thought were wrong in the Visigothic Catholic Church.
