Eighty Eight is a small, unincorporated community in Barren County, Kentucky, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Eighty Eight is about 10 miles east of Glasgow on State Highway 90.
This community is famous for its unique name. It also gained attention for special celebrations held on dates like August 8, 1988 (08/08/88). People who liked the number 8 came from all over to celebrate. This event was even shown on national television! A similar celebration happened on August 8, 2008 (08/08/08). However, the news coverage for this event was mostly taken over by the 2008 Summer Olympics.
How Eighty Eight Got Its Name
The community of Eighty Eight was named in 1860. The first postmaster, Dabnie Nunnally, chose the name. He thought his handwriting was hard to read. He believed using numbers would make things clearer. He then reached into his pocket and found 88 cents. This is one story about how the name came to be.
Another idea is that the community is exactly 8.8 miles from Glasgow. Both explanations are popular stories about the origin of the name.
The Eighty Eight General Store
For many years, the only store in this small community was run by the Richardson Brothers. It was a very important place for local people. They could buy animal feed, groceries, hardware, and other farm supplies there. The store closed in the late 1980s.
In 2005, the building was fixed up and reopened as the Eighty Eight General Store. The old post office, which used the Zip Code 42130, was kept inside. It is now open for visitors to see, but it stopped providing postal services in 1984.
Community Life
Eighty Eight is home to a group of people who attend the Church of Christ. While some people might mistakenly call it the Eighty Eight Church of Christ, its correct name is Refuge Church of Christ. This church is an important part of the community's local life.
