Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Eikyū (永久) was a special name for a period of time in Japanese history, like how we have years today. It's called a Japanese era name or nengō. The Eikyū era came after the Ten'ei era and before the Gen'ei era. This time period started in July 1113 and ended in April 1118. During these years, the ruler of Japan was Emperor Toba.

What Happened During the Eikyū Era?

The Eikyū era was a time when Emperor Toba was active and important events took place. Here are some of the key things that happened:

  • 1113 (Eikyū 1, 4th month): A powerful leader named Fujiwara Tadasane was given a very important job. He became the kampaku, which was like a chief advisor to the emperor. This person helped the emperor make big decisions for the country.
  • 1113 (Eikyū 1, 4th month): Emperor Toba visited two important places of worship. He went to the Matsunoo-taisha shrine and the Kitano Tenman-gū shrine. Emperors often visited shrines to show respect and pray for the well-being of Japan.
  • 1113 (Eikyū 1, 10th month): Emperor Toba also visited temples on Mount Hiei. This mountain is near Kyoto and was home to many important Buddhist temples. It was a very spiritual place.
  • 1113 (Eikyū 1, 11th month): Later that year, Emperor Toba visited two more famous shrines. He went to the Inari Shrine and the Yasaka Shrine. The Yasaka Shrine was known as the "Gion Shrine" back then.
