Where is El Ayote?
El Ayote is about 162 kilometers (about 100 miles) away from Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua.
It shares borders with several other towns:
- To the north, it borders Paiwas.
- To the south, it borders El Rama.
- To the east, it borders El Tortuguero and El Rama.
- To the west, it borders Santo Domingo, La Libertad, and Camoapa.
History of El Ayote
El Ayote is one of Nicaragua's newer municipalities. It officially became its own municipality in April 2000. Before that, it was part of the larger municipality of El Rama. It was hard to manage because of the long distance and poor roads.
How the Town Started
According to stories told by the first people who lived there, El Ayote began as a small settlement. About 25 families moved there from an area called La Piñuela. They included families like the Zeledón, Sotelo, and Arróliga families.
Before people settled there, it was a mountain area with a military base. Soldiers helped move families to El Ayote because they were in danger from another group during a time of conflict. As the town grew, people from nearby areas would visit on weekends. They came to buy things that traders brought from other cities.
Growth of the Town
In 1990, El Ayote was chosen as a place for soldiers from different groups to stop fighting. Many of these soldiers decided to stay in the area. They received land or started their own farms. This helped the town grow very quickly.
People of El Ayote
El Ayote currently has about 20,013 people living there.
- About 50.3% of the people are men.
- About 49.7% of the people are women.
- Almost 42.7% of the population lives in the main town area.
Nature and Climate
El Ayote has two main seasons:
- The rainy season is hot, humid, and cloudy.
- The dry season is very hot, muggy, windy, and partly cloudy.
Throughout the year, the temperature usually stays between 18 and 32 degrees Celsius (64 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit). It rarely gets colder than 16 °C (61 °F) or hotter than 34 °C (93 °F).
Mountains and Rainfall
The land in El Ayote has natural features like mountains. These are part of the central mountain range formed by volcanoes, with the Amerrisque Mountains being a main part. The area gets a good amount of rain each year, between 2000 and 2450 mm (about 79 to 96 inches). This is enough rain for raising livestock, even though the municipality is surrounded by a tropical humid forest.

Trade and Commerce
Since the 1990s, trade has become very important in the main town. Because El Ayote is easy to reach, it is a meeting place for traders and farmers from El Ayote and nearby towns. Farmers can transport their livestock and farm products by paved road to markets across the country. When they go to sell their products, they also buy things like shoes, clothes, medicines, and other goods for their homes and farms.
