Rama is a city and a special area in Nicaragua. It is part of the South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region. This city is found along the Bluefields River. This big river splits into three smaller rivers: the Sumi, Rama, and Bluefields. Rama is a very important port city. Ships from the Atlantic and Caribbean seas use its port. About 59,055 people lived in Rama in 2022.

History of Rama

Rama is a very old place. Its name comes from its first people, the Rama. These native people used to live in the areas of Bluefields and Rama today.

The Rama people were different from the Miskito. They did not give in to the British or other European countries starting in 1633. The Rama also fought against pirates and Spanish conquistadors. These invaders tried to make them slaves during the time of conquest.

Growth of the Municipality

Rama became more important in the late 1800s. This was when companies from the United States began taking out wood, rubber, and bananas. This new business brought many people to Rama. People came from other parts of Nicaragua. Chinese citizens also moved there, mostly to work in trade.

Later, a highway was built connecting Managua to Rama. This road made it easier for many farmers to move to the area.

The municipality of Rama has 98 different communities. Here are some of the main ones:
