Meet the Artist: Roy Lichtenstein
Roy Lichtenstein was a famous American artist. He was a big part of the Pop art movement. Pop art used images from popular culture, like comic books and advertisements. Lichtenstein started making art like this in the 1960s.
His paintings often looked like giant comic strips. He used bright, bold colors. He also used thick, dark lines. You could often see speech bubbles and sound effects in his art. A special technique he used was called "Ben-Day dots." These were small dots that created shading and color, just like in old comic books. His painting Look Mickey (from 1961) was one of his first famous works using this style.
Lichtenstein didn't start making 3D sculptures until the late 1970s. Before that, he mostly painted on large canvases. El Cap de Barcelona was his very first outdoor sculpture made with ceramic tile.
What Does the Sculpture Look Like?
This sculpture stands tall right on the waterfront in Barcelona. It's made from concrete and covered in colorful ceramic tiles. It's an abstract shape, but it clearly looks like a woman's head. If you look at it from far away, it almost seems like a painting!
The sculpture uses Lichtenstein's signature style. It has bold primary colors like red, yellow, blue, black, and white. The woman's eyes and nose look like thick brush strokes. Her lips are bright red, like a quick swipe of paint.
One side of her face (the left side with the blue nose and eye) is covered in white tiles. The other side (the right two-thirds) is covered in a pattern of red dots. These dots are a classic part of Lichtenstein's pop art style.
There are other artistic touches too. Below the head, where a neck would be, there's a tall, flat blue and white shape. This shape goes up through her face and a bit above her head. Another yellow and black shape crosses it. It starts at the bottom and then appears again at the top of her head.
Why is it Made of Tiles?
Lichtenstein made The Head of Barcelona look like it was painted with quick brush strokes. This is similar to some of his earlier sculptures from the 1980s, called Brushstrokes. However, those earlier sculptures were made from painted aluminum. The Head of Barcelona is special because it's his only sculpture made from concrete and covered in mosaic tiles.
There's a good reason for this difference. The sculpture was designed to honor the style of Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí was a famous architect from Catalonia, the region where Barcelona is located. He was known for using curvy, natural shapes and lots of mosaic tiles in his buildings. Barcelona is famous for Gaudí's unique mosaic art. So, Lichtenstein's sculpture fits right in with the city's artistic history!
