El Mirón is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the province of Ávila, in the region of Castile and León, Spain. In 2006, about 198 people lived there. By 2012, the population had grown slightly to 207 residents.

Discovering El Mirón's Ancient Past

El Mirón became famous because of an amazing discovery made in 2015. Scientists found a very old human skeleton in a place called the El Mirón Cave. This cave is located near the town.

Who Was the Red Lady of El Mirón?

The skeleton belonged to a woman from the Upper Paleolithic period. This was a time in history when early humans lived, long before farming or cities existed. She was part of the Magdalenian culture, known for its advanced tools and art.

The woman was about 35 to 40 years old when she died. What makes her special is that her skeleton was covered in ochre. Ochre is a natural red pigment, like a reddish-brown paint. Because of this, she was given the nickname "The Red Lady of El Mirón".

How Old is the Red Lady?

Scientists believe the Red Lady was buried around 18,700 years ago! This makes her a very important discovery. She helps us learn more about how people lived and buried their dead in ancient times. Her burial suggests that people back then had special rituals and beliefs.
