About El Porvenir
El Porvenir became an official town on January 13, 1890. This was when the area was made into a municipality. For a while, the town was also known as El Porvenir de Velasco Suárez.
How El Porvenir Got Its Name
On July 31, 1976, the local government added "Velasco Suárez" to the town's name. This was done to honor Dr. Manuel Velasco Suárez. He was a famous Mexican doctor who was also the governor of Chiapas from 1970 to 1976. However, in 1982, the town's name went back to just El Porvenir. The larger municipality still keeps the name El Porvenir.
Where is El Porvenir?
The town of El Porvenir is located very high up in the mountains. It sits at an elevation of 2,839 meters (about 9,314 feet) above sea level. This makes it one of the highest towns in Mexico. It is found in the Sierra Madre mountains of Chiapas. The town is also quite close to the border with Guatemala.
The entire municipality of El Porvenir covers an area of 121.70 square kilometers. In 2010, about 13,201 people lived in the municipality. Out of these, 1,436 people lived in the main town of El Porvenir itself.
Connecting Communities
On August 27, 2001, the President of Mexico at the time, Vicente Fox, visited El Porvenir. He took part in a special ceremony. In this ceremony, El Porvenir officially became "twinned" with another city called San Pedro Garza García. This other city is in the state of Nuevo León, which is in the northern part of Mexico.
This "twinning" was a symbolic event. It showed a connection between the industrial, developed northern part of Mexico and the rural, less developed southern part. It was a way to bring different parts of the country closer together.
