The Story of El Siglo de Torreón
How the Newspaper Began
In 1921, Antonio de Juambelz y Bracho was already working on a newspaper. This newspaper was in the capital of Coahuila. It helped a person named Gral. Arnulfo González run for governor. When he became governor, that newspaper stopped.
Antonio de Juambelz knew a lot about making newspapers. So, Joaquín Moreno invited him to Torreón. They wanted to start a new newspaper for the region. They called it "Defender of the Community."
Getting the First Printing Press
They got their first printing machine from the governor of Durango state. He was happy to give it to them. Joaquín Moreno was the managing director of the new company. Antonio de Juambelz became the sub-manager.
They had few resources and only a few people who knew about printing. Still, they started preparing the first issue of "El Siglo." It was ready to print on September 22. But they had mechanical problems. So, the newspaper couldn't be printed the next day. Finally, on February 28, 1922, "El Siglo" was printed and sold for the first time.
Changes in Leadership
In 1925, Joaquín Moreno became ill. He had to leave his job as director. José E. Campos took over. Mr. Campos had worked for El Excélsior, a big newspaper in Mexico.
Mr. Campos made many changes to "El Siglo." He gave it a more modern look. But he felt out of place in a smaller city. He was used to working for a large national newspaper. So, he went back to Mexico City. After he left, Antonio de Juambelz took full control of "El Siglo de Torreón."
