What's in a Name?
The name "Toro" has changed over time. It comes from the Catalan word "Turó". "Turó" means 'hill'. Many different cultures have lived on Menorca. They have all influenced the name. The name might also come from Arabic. In Arabic, 'tor' or 'al-tor' means 'height'.
Where is El Toro?
Monte Toro rises above the farms and smaller hills around it. It is about 2 miles (3 km) east of the town of Es Mercadal. This town is right in the middle of Menorca. You can see El Toro from almost anywhere on the island. It is easy to spot because it is Menorca's only really tall hill.
What Can You See From the Top?
On a clear day, you can see the entire island of Menorca. You can especially see the northern part. This stretches from Ciutadella all the way to Fornells. Sometimes, you can even see the mountains on the island of Mallorca!
Interesting Places at the Top
At the very top of El Toro, you will find the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Toro. This is an old Gothic church. It was built way back in 1670. There is also a statue of Christ there. This statue was a gift. You can find a gift shop too. There is also a restaurant with fantastic views.
