History of El Zape
Early Settlers and Founding
The area where El Zape is located was first home to the Tepehuán people. In the late 1500s, Spanish explorers found silver in Guanaceví. This discovery led many people to move to the region.
In 1596, a priest named Jeronimo Ramirez visited the Tepehuán settlement of El Zape. The next year, in 1597, he built a mission there called San Ignacio de El Zape. Later, in 1604, another priest named Juan Fonte officially founded the town of El Zape.
The Tepehuán Revolt
Life for the native people under Spanish rule was very difficult. These tough conditions led to a major uprising in 1616, known as the Tepehuán Revolt. During this revolt, the Tepehuán people attacked Spanish settlements.
The nearby town of Guanaceví helped El Zape by donating important supplies. They gave seeds, tools, and animals to the people of El Zape. During this time, the Jesuits (a religious group) worked harder to teach the children of El Zape about their faith. Children who read the Bible and went to church were considered very smart. The Tepehuán people also grew corn and sold it to nearby mines.
During the revolt, El Zape became a place where many lives were lost. This event was a sad and violent part of the town's history.
Climate
El Zape experiences a varied climate throughout the year. The warmest months are typically May and June, while the coolest months are December and January.
