Dame Mary Elaine Kellett-Bowman (born Mary Elaine Kay; 8 July 1923 – 4 March 2014) was an important British politician. She was a member of the Conservative Party. For 27 years, she served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Lancaster. This means she represented the people of Lancaster in the UK Parliament from 1970 to 1997.

Early Life and Education
Mary Elaine Kay was born on 8 July 1923. Her parents were Walter and Edith Kay. She went to school at The Mount School, York. Later, she studied at St Anne's College, Oxford and Barnett House, Oxford.
After her studies, she became a barrister in 1964. A barrister is a type of lawyer who represents people in court.
A Career in Politics
Elaine Kellett-Bowman started her political journey locally. She was a councillor on Denbigh Borough Council from 1952 to 1955. A councillor helps manage local services in a town or city. She also served on the London Borough of Camden council from 1968 to 1974.
She was also a governor for Culford School in Suffolk. She held this role for many years, from 1963 to 2003.
Serving in the UK Parliament
Before becoming an MP, Elaine Kellett-Bowman tried to get elected in other areas. She ran for Parliament in Nelson and Colne in 1955. She also ran in South West Norfolk twice in 1959. In addition, she ran in Buckingham in 1964 and 1966.
Finally, she was elected as the MP for Lancaster in 1970. She continued to represent Lancaster until she retired in 1997. This was a total of 27 years serving in the UK Parliament.
Working in Europe
Besides her work in the UK Parliament, she also served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). The European Parliament is a group of elected officials from countries in Europe. They work together on laws and policies that affect many European nations.
She was part of the British group in the European Parliament starting in 1975. In 1979, she was elected as an MEP for the area of Cumbria. She stayed an MEP until 1984. At that point, she decided to focus all her efforts on her role as an MP in the British Parliament.
Family Life
Elaine Kellett-Bowman had four children with her first husband, Charles Norman Kellett. Sadly, Charles died in a car accident in December 1959. Elaine also suffered injuries and memory loss in the accident.
In June 1971, she married Edward Bowman. Both Elaine and Edward were active in politics. They served together on the Camden Borough Council. They also both served as Members of the European Parliament. When they married, they decided to combine their last names. They both took the shared surname 'Kellett-Bowman'.
