Elamin Abdelmahmoud (born March 10, 1988) is a writer, commentator, and broadcaster from Canada. He was born in Sudan. He is well-known for writing about culture for BuzzFeed and for hosting shows on CBC Radio.
In 2023, he started hosting a new CBC Radio show called Commotion. It is a daily show about pop culture that airs after Q.
Early Life and School
Elamin was born in Sudan. When he was 12 years old, he moved to Canada and settled in Kingston, Ontario.
He went to Queen's University. There, he studied philosophy and gender studies. He graduated in 2011. While he was a student, he wrote for the Queen’s Journal newspaper. He also worked at CFRC-FM, the campus radio station. In 2018, Queen's Alumni Association gave him the "One to Watch Award."
His Career
Elamin Abdelmahmoud started his career at the CBC. He worked as a production assistant. In 2012, he became a researcher for the show George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight. Later, he joined The National as a researcher and editorial assistant.
He then worked at TVO. There, he managed social media for their show The Agenda. In 2015, Elamin joined BuzzFeed. By 2018, he was writing BuzzFeed's morning newsletter. His inspiring messages at the end of his newsletters became very popular.
Elamin has been a guest on many CBC programs, including The National. In 2019, he started co-hosting a political podcast called Party Lines. He hosted it with Canadian political journalist Rosemary Barton. In 2020, he began hosting Pop Chat. The same year, he also became the new host of Podcast Playlist.
As a writer, Elamin has written longer articles about culture and politics. His work has appeared in magazines like Chatelaine and Maclean's. He has also written for The Guardian.
