Eldorado River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Eldorado River (sometimes called Eldorado Creek) is a waterway in the U.S. state of Alaska. It flows across the Seward Peninsula. This river is located about 14 miles west of a town called Solomon.

About the Eldorado River

The Eldorado River begins near Salmon Lake. A low area of land separates it from the lake. From there, it flows southeast for about 30 miles. It joins the Flambeau River before emptying into Safety Sound. Finally, its waters reach the Bering Sea. The river's path goes through areas with limestone rocks and a type of rock called schist.

History of the River

The local name for the Eldorado River was first written down in 1899. This was done by explorers Frank Charles Schrader and Alfred Hulse Brooks. The river then appeared on a map made by the United States Geological Survey in 1900.

Gold Discoveries

People found gold in several small streams that flow into the Eldorado River. These streams include San Jose, Mulligan, Fox, and Venetia. Miners used a method called sluicing to find gold in Mulligan, Fox, and Venetia creeks.

Venetia Creek is about 10 miles long. It starts near the headwaters of Canyon and Iron creeks. These are streams that flow into the Kruzgamepa River. In August 1900, miners were actively sluicing for gold there. The solid rock layer, called bedrock, was found about 2 to 3 feet below the surface.
