Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Elektra was a famous figure from ancient Greek mythology. She was the daughter of Agamemnon, who was the powerful King of Mycenae, and his wife, Clytemnestra. Elektra had a brother named Orestes and two sisters, Iphigenia and Chrysothemis. Her story is one of loyalty and seeking justice for her family.

Who Was Elektra of Mycenae?

Elektra lived in the ancient city of Mycenae, a very important kingdom in ancient Greece. She was a princess, but her life was filled with dramatic events. Many ancient Greek plays and stories tell about her, showing her strong feelings and determination.

Her Family and Early Life

Elektra's father, King Agamemnon, was a great leader. He led the Greek army in the famous Trojan War. Her mother, Clytemnestra, was a queen with a strong will. Elektra's sisters were Iphigenia and Chrysothemis, and her brother was Orestes. This family was at the center of many myths.

A Difficult Time for Her Family

Before the Trojan War, King Agamemnon made a very difficult choice. To get good winds for his ships to sail to Troy, he sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia. This act deeply angered Clytemnestra. After the Trojan War ended, Agamemnon returned home. However, Clytemnestra and her new partner, Aegisthus, planned against him. They killed Agamemnon to get revenge for Iphigenia's death and to take control of Mycenae.

Seeking Justice for Her Father

Elektra was very sad and angry about her father's death. She believed that her mother and Aegisthus should be punished for what they did. Elektra waited for her brother Orestes to grow up and return to Mycenae. When Orestes came back, Elektra helped him. Together, they sought justice for their father Agamemnon's murder. This act of seeking justice is a central part of Elektra's story in Greek myths.
