Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Elem Indian Colony of Pomo Indians is a Native American tribe located in California. They are also known as the Elem Band of Pomo or the Sulfur Bank Band of Pomo Indians. This tribe is part of the larger Pomo people, who have lived in Northern California for thousands of years. The Elem Indian Colony is officially recognized by the United States government.

Their home is a special area of land called a reservation, which is about 50 acres (20 hectares) in size. It's located near Clearlake Oaks, California, right on the eastern shore of Clear Lake. This beautiful lake is a central part of their history and culture. The reservation was first created in 1949 and was known as the Sulfur Bank Rancheria.

The Elem tribe officially organized itself in 1936. Today, about 100 people are members of the Elem Indian Colony. They are working to get back Rattlesnake Island, which is close to their reservation. This island is very important to them because their ancestors held special ceremonies there for hundreds of years.

Learning and Schools

The children and young people of the Elem Indian Colony attend schools that are part of the Konocti Unified School District. This school district provides education for students living in and around the Clear Lake area.
