Clearlake Oaks is a small community in Lake County, California, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area defined by the government for counting people, but it doesn't have its own city government like a regular town or city.

Clearlake Oaks is located on the northeast side of Clear Lake, a large freshwater lake. It's about 8 miles (13.8 km) northwest of the town of Clearlake. The area sits at an elevation of about 1,335 feet (407 meters) above sea level. In 2020, the population of Clearlake Oaks was 2,551 people.

A Look Back in Time: Clearlake Oaks History

Clearlake Oaks had a couple of different names before it became what it is today. It was once called Stubbs and also Clear Lake Oaks.

How the Town Started

The original part of the town, which is a bit inland from State Route 20, was divided into smaller pieces of land for building homes back in the 1920s. This old part of town is shaped like a triangle. It has a central area that was meant to be a plaza. Today, this plaza is paved and used for parking by a church. Many of the homes in this older part of the village still look like the "fishing cottages" they were originally built as.

Name Changes and Growth

The post office in the community first opened in 1926 and was called Stubbs. This name honored Charles Stubbs, who owned a lot of land in the area. In 1935, the post office changed its name to Clearlake Oaks, and the community adopted that name too.

Changes Over the Years

Over time, the "downtown" area of Clearlake Oaks changed a lot. In 1990, the town had many businesses, including two markets, a hardware store, two gas stations, a video store, a salon, and several restaurants and bars. There was even a private marina where you could rent boats for fishing and water skiing.

However, by the late 1990s, many of these businesses had closed. The town ended up with just one market, one convenience store, and an antique shop that was struggling. This change happened for a few reasons, including the post office moving and the population getting older.

New Parks for the Community

In recent years, the park, beach, and pier in Clearlake Oaks were updated and improved. Around 2007, a new park was being created next to the grocery store. This park was named Nylander Park, after the person who owned the local grocery store. These improvements help make Clearlake Oaks a nice place for people to live and visit.
