The very first people to live in this area were the Pomo Indians. They gave names to many important places, including Mount Konocti. Over time, European settlers and gold miners arrived. Sadly, many Pomo people died from new diseases and harsh treatment. This led to a lot of land becoming available for new settlers during the Gold Rush.
