Eleonora Luisa Gonzaga (born November 13, 1686 – died March 16, 1741) was an Italian noblewoman. She became the Duchess of Rovere and Montefeltro when she married Francesco Maria de' Medici. Eleonora was the oldest child of Vincenzo Gonzaga, who was the Duke of Guastalla and Sabbioneta. Her mother was Princess Maria Vittoria Gonzaga. Eleonora and Francesco Maria did not have any children.

Eleonora's Life Story

Eleonora Luisa Gonzaga married Francesco Maria de' Medici on July 14, 1709. Her husband was 48 years old, which was much older than her, and he was quite large.

Before the wedding, Francesco Maria's brother, Cosimo III de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, wanted to make sure Eleonora was a good match. He sent people to check on her appearance. They reported that she was very beautiful.

The Medici family really needed a son to continue their family line. Francesco Maria had been a cardinal, a high-ranking church official. But his brother arranged for him to leave the church so he could marry and have children.

Eleonora Luisa found it difficult to be married to him. Despite their efforts, they did not have any children. This made Francesco Maria very sad.

On February 2, 1711, Francesco Maria passed away from a condition called dropsy, which causes swelling in the body. He left behind many debts.

Eleonora Luisa stayed at the court in Tuscany for a while after her husband's death. Later, after her nephew-in-law Gian Gastone de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany died, she moved to Padua in the Republic of Venice. She passed away there on March 16, 1741.
