Elette Boyle is a super smart computer scientist and expert in cryptography. Cryptography is the science of keeping information safe and secret. She works on cool topics like keeping secrets safe online (called secret sharing) and making sure digital messages are real (digital signatures). She is a professor at a university in Israel called the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya. There, she leads a special center that studies the basic ideas and uses of cryptography.
Becoming a Computer Scientist
Elette grew up in Yamhill, Oregon, in the USA. She went to college at the California Institute of Technology, which is a very famous science school. While there, she wasn't just good at math; she was also a great athlete! She competed in the high jump and was even named the best female student-athlete at Caltech in 2007-2008.
After finishing college in 2008, Elette went on to get her Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT is another one of the world's top science and technology schools. Her teachers there were two very important computer scientists, Shafi Goldwasser and Yael Tauman Kalai.
Before becoming a professor at IDC Herzliya, she did special research work. This was at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and at Cornell University.
Awards and Recognition
Elette Boyle's work is highly respected in the world of computer science. One of her research papers won a special award in 2016. This paper was about how to share secrets using a method called homomorphic encryption. This method lets people do calculations on encrypted (secret) data without ever having to unlock the secret itself!
She was also asked to give a main speech at a big conference in 2018. This conference was called Public Key Cryptography. Being invited to speak at such an event shows how important her research is to other experts.
