The Patricia's Robber Frog (Eleutherodactylus patriciae) is a small frog that lives only in the Dominican Republic. It belongs to a group of frogs called Eleutherodactylidae, often known as "robber frogs" because of their quick movements. This special frog is found high up in the Cordillera Central mountains, living in cool, moist forests.

About the Patricia's Robber Frog

This unique frog was first described by a scientist named Albert Schwartz in 1965. It's named patriciae, likely after someone important to its discovery or the scientist.

Where Does It Live?

The Patricia's Robber Frog is an endemic species, which means it lives naturally in only one specific place in the world. For this frog, that place is the Cordillera Central mountain range in the Dominican Republic. It prefers to live in dense, high-altitude forests and what's left of these forests.

It can be found at very high elevations, from about 2,000 to 3,050 meters (which is about 6,560 to 10,000 feet) above sea level. Imagine living on top of a tall mountain! These mountain forests provide the perfect cool and damp environment for the frog to thrive.

Why Is It in Danger?

Sadly, the Patricia's Robber Frog is facing several serious threats that put its future at risk.

Habitat Loss

One of the biggest dangers is habitat loss. People are clearing the forests where these frogs live to create space for farms and other activities. When their forest homes are cut down, the frogs lose the places they need to find food, shelter, and lay their eggs.

Ecotourism Disturbance

Even though ecotourism can be good for local economies, too many visitors or uncontrolled activities can disturb the frog's natural habitats. This can stress the frogs and make it harder for them to survive.

Chytridiomycosis

Another major threat is a disease called chytridiomycosis. This is a very serious fungal infection that affects amphibians like frogs all over the world. It attacks their skin, making it hard for them to breathe and absorb water, which can lead to death. This disease is a big concern for many frog species, including the Patricia's Robber Frog.

Protecting the Patricia's Robber Frog

Because of these threats, the Patricia's Robber Frog is considered an endangered species. Protecting its mountain forest home and finding ways to stop the spread of diseases like chytridiomycosis are very important steps to help this special frog survive for future generations.
