A Look Back: Elfers' History
The area we now call Elfers used to be known as the Baillie settlement. The name "Elfers" came about in 1909. This was when the first post office opened. Frieda Marie Eiland, the wife of the first postmaster, chose the name. She wanted to honor her favorite uncle, whose last name was Elfers.
In 1913, a railroad line reached Elfers. This was important for shipping citrus fruits. Citrus was a big crop in Florida. In 1915, the first brick school in western Pasco County opened in Elfers. A new school building replaced it in 1966.
The old brick school building is still used today. It has been turned into the Elfers CARES Center. This center had a grand re-opening in 2013. It now has a cafe and a large auditorium. It also houses the Avery Branch of the New Port Richey Public Library. Elfers was officially a town from 1925 to 1933.
