A Look Back at Elgin's History
Elgin was founded in 1869. It used to be a very busy place, especially for shipping cattle by train on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad. The first store in the county was opened here by L. P. Getman. Also, John Lee, William Gamble, and Beadle Welsh set up the first sawmill in 1870, bringing it all the way from Wisconsin.
When the cattle business slowed down, Elgin found new life with an "oil boom." This meant lots of oil was discovered, bringing jobs and people. However, this oil boom only lasted until the mid-1920s. The post office in Elgin closed down in 1976.
