Eli is a small, unincorporated community in Cherry County, Nebraska, United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government. It's like a small village without a mayor or town council.

About 60 to 75 people live in Eli, but an exact count hasn't been taken recently. It is located about 1 mile (1.6 km) north of U.S. Route 20. This road is a major highway that crosses the northern part of Nebraska. Eli is also about 2.5 miles (4 km) south of the border with South Dakota.

Eli is situated in a rural part of Nebraska. The closest town to Eli is Merriman, which is about 11.8 miles (19 km) to the west. Another nearby town is Cody, located about 12.8 miles (20.6 km) to the west.

History of Eli

Eli got its name from a railroad worker named Daniel Webster Hitchcock. His friends and co-workers had a nickname for him: "Get-there-Eli." This nickname stuck, and the community was named after him.

A post office was opened in Eli in 1909. This was an important place for people to send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years. However, it eventually closed down in 1967.
