Elijah is a small, quiet community located in the eastern part of Ozark County, Missouri. It's what we call an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county area.
Where is Elijah, Missouri?
Elijah is found about 22 miles west of a town called West Plains. You can reach it by traveling on Missouri Supplemental Route V. This route is just one mile south of U.S. Route 160. The community is built along North Bridges Creek. You can also find a natural spring called Spoon Spring right within the village.
The Story Behind the Name
This community was named after a person named Elijah Harden. He was the son of one of the very first settlers in the area. It's common for places to be named after important people or features from their early days.
Elijah's Post Office History
A post office was opened in Elijah in 1905. This was an important service for the people living there. It helped them send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years. However, it eventually closed its doors in 1977. Even though the local post office is closed, mail service still reaches Elijah. Today, mail for Elijah is handled by the post office in Caulfield.
