Elijah Haatuakali Kaiba Mudenda (born June 6, 1927 – died November 2, 2008) was an important Zambian politician. He was the second Prime Minister of Zambia from May 27, 1975, to July 20, 1977.
Early Life and Education
Elijah Mudenda was born in Macha, a place in the Choma District of Southern Province. He started his schooling at Macha Central and then went to Sikalongo Boys School.
He continued his studies at Munali Secondary School, Makerere University, and the University of Fort Hare in South Africa. There, he earned a master's degree. Later, he got another degree in agriculture from Peterhouse, which is part of the University of Cambridge in the UK.
When he returned to Zambia, Mr. Mudenda worked as a research officer. He focused on improving how plants grow.
His Journey in Politics
Mr. Mudenda started his political career in 1962. When Zambia became independent, he was chosen as the Minister of Agriculture. This meant he was in charge of farming and food production for the country.
Three years later, he became the Minister of Finance. In this role, he managed Zambia's money and economy. In 1969, he became the Foreign Minister. This job involved working with other countries and representing Zambia around the world. He also served on many international groups.
On May 27, 1975, President Kenneth Kaunda chose Mr. Mudenda to be the Prime Minister. This happened after the previous Prime Minister, Mainza Chona, stepped down. As Prime Minister, Mr. Mudenda was responsible for all government departments that dealt with the economy. The goal was to help parts of the economy that were not related to mining grow stronger.
He served as Prime Minister until July 20, 1977. After that, the same person who was Prime Minister before him took over again. Mr. Mudenda was a member of the UNIP. He retired from politics after his party lost the 1991 general elections to the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) Party.
Mr. Mudenda also supported the Cuba-Zambia Friendship Association. In 2005, he received the Friendship Medal from Cuba. This award recognized his efforts in building good relationships between the two countries.
His Passing
Elijah Mudenda passed away at Maina Soko Military Hospital in Lusaka. After his death, he was given a state funeral. This is a special ceremony held for important national figures. He was buried on November 6, 2008, at his farm in Lusaka.
Many important people attended his funeral. These included former President Kaunda, President Rupiah Banda, and former President Frederick Chiluba.
Kenneth Kaunda spoke at the funeral. He said that Mr. Mudenda "had a vision for the development of this country." He also mentioned that Mr. Mudenda had a vision for the progress of Africa. Kaunda believed that Mr. Mudenda would leave a lasting positive impact.
Education Minister Geoffrey Lungwangwa also spoke. He described Mr. Mudenda as a "humble but distinguished servant of the people." He added that Zambia was thankful for his life and service to Zambia, Africa, and the world.
