Discovering the Eliphalet Austin House

The Eliphalet Austin House is a historic home located in Austinburg, Ohio. It was built by Eliphalet Austin, who was a very important person in the early history of the area. The house has a long story, and it shows how buildings can change over many years.

Who Was Eliphalet Austin?

Eliphalet Austin was a key figure in settling parts of Ohio. In the late 1700s, a group called the Connecticut Land Company was formed. Their goal was to help people move to and develop land in what is now the Connecticut Western Reserve region of Ohio.

Eliphalet Austin joined this company. He bought large areas of land, including the place that is now called Austinburg Township. The town itself is named after him! He moved to Austinburg in 1799. Local stories say he had his house built around 1811.

As northeastern Ohio grew, Eliphalet Austin became very well-known. He owned land in many different counties. He also helped deliver mail and ran a business buying and selling cattle. From 1829 to 1831, he even served as a state senator. This meant he helped make laws for the state of Ohio. After he passed away, his family inherited his property.

How the House Changed Over Time

Eliphalet Austin's house is made of brick and is built in the Italianate style. This style often features wide eaves, tall windows, and decorative brackets. However, the house looks very different today than it did when it was first built.

It seems that the house was greatly changed in the 1860s. Eliphalet Austin's grandson, Louis B. Austin, was in charge of this big renovation project. We don't have exact papers from that time about the changes. But many details of the house match what was popular in the 1860s. Also, the Italianate style didn't become common in the United States until after 1844. This helps us know the house was updated later.

A Special Historic Landmark

In 1975, the Eliphalet Austin House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history. The house was chosen for two main reasons:

  • Its unique architecture, especially its Italianate style.
  • Its connection to Eliphalet Austin, who was a very important person in the region's history.

The Eliphalet Austin House is one of three properties in Austinburg Township that are on the National Register. The other two are the Congregational Church of Austinburg and the L.W. Peck House in Eagleville.
