About Elisabetta Dami
Elisabetta Dami was born in Milan, Italy. Her father, Piero Dami, started a publishing company called Dami Editore in 1972. When Elisabetta was just 13 years old, she began working in the family business. She started as a proofreader, checking books for mistakes. By the time she was 19, she was already writing her own short stories!
Elisabetta loves adventure. When she was 20, she earned licenses to fly an airplane and to go skydiving. At 23, she traveled all around the world by herself. She even completed a well-known survival course at the Outward Bound school in Maine, USA.
Her other exciting adventures include taking part in a rally race in the Sahara desert. She also drove an off-road vehicle across Africa, from north to south. She even ran a very long race called the 100-km Sahara ultramarathon. Plus, she completed the New York Marathon three times, in 2002, 2003, and 2017.
How Geronimo Stilton Was Created
In the early 1990s, Elisabetta Dami started volunteering at a children's hospital. She spent time caring for sick children there. During this time, she decided to write fun adventure stories for them. These stories featured a brave mouse named Geronimo Stilton as the main character.
These stories quickly became a huge success. They were popular not only in Italy but all over the world.
Elisabetta Dami once said:
For a while I worked as a volunteer in a hospital, and it was there, almost by chance, that I invented Geronimo Stilton … It was at the time when Patch Adams taught the world that children need to laugh to get better. So I started to make up funny stories in which the protagonist was a clumsy mouse called Geronimo Stilton. He would get involved in all sorts of entertaining adventures, full of funny events and twists in the plot, that children found really compelling.
The Geronimo Stilton stories have been translated into 49 different languages. More than 180 million copies of the books have been sold worldwide. This makes Geronimo Stilton one of the most popular children's book series ever!
