About Elisapie's Life and Career

Elisapie was born in Salluit, Quebec. Her mother was Inuk, and her father was from Newfoundland. When she was just twelve years old, she performed with the band Sugluk. Her uncle, George Kakayuk, was also a member of this band.

Early Music Career

In the early 2000s, Elisapie worked with musician Alain Auger. They formed a music group called Taima. Taima means "that's all" or "it is done" in Inuktitut. Their only album, also called Taima, won a Juno Award in 2005. This award was for the best Aboriginal Recording of the Year. In 2006, Elisapie wrote songs for the film The White Planet.

Solo Albums and Awards

In 2010, Elisapie released her first solo album, There Will Be Stars. She sang songs in English, French, and Inuktitut on this album. Her second solo album, Travelling Love, came out in 2012.

During the Juno Awards, Elisapie was first nominated for "Breakthrough Artist of the Year". However, it was later found that she had already won a Juno Award in 2005. So, the nomination was given to another artist.

Elisapie also received a nomination for a Canadian Screen Award in 2014. This was for her song "Far Away," which was in the film The Legend of Sarila. Her album The Ballad of the Runaway Girl was nominated for the Indigenous Music Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2019. In July 2019, this album was also considered for the 2019 Polaris Music Prize. This album also featured songs in English, French, and Inuktitut.
